Tasting Notes :
Prelight: Typical barnyard, peeper and slight cocoa undertones. Beautiful tubo and presentation, a lovely wrapper and construction as always from Padron. The draw is on the tighter side which is slightly surprising but not unwelcome. This cigar is my birthday cigar and I want to enjoy it to its fullest!
First Third: Upon lighting, the Padron 1964 Presidente Tubo Natural Cigar greets the palate with a symphony of flavors. A gentle introduction of cocoa and nutmeg creates a harmonious base, followed by subtle notes of cedar that add a layer of complexity. The draw is effortless, allowing the initial flavors to unfold with grace. At first I have a lot of pepper on the retro hale which is typical for a Padron especially the natural series as I find these more peppery than their maduro counterparts! Weird I know. The first half an inch after the pepper is some dried fruit, reminds me a spicy and sweet Swedish fruit cake. Undertones of sweetness, dark chocolate, leather, and cedar appear. After the first half inch the retrohale starts to mellow out and the dried fruit and sweetness flavor notes start to take the forefront as the spice and pepper fades away. Maybe that is accentuated by the yummy Malbec Wine from 2017 but it’s very yummy and smooth. Construction and burn is razor sharp for the first couple inches. The aroma is something I have never gotten from a Padron. It’s like an oaky vanilla cake with cream. Phenomenal! Transitions to cream cedar and more dried fruits with some nutty and white pepper undertones on the retrohale, but incredibly smooth for most Padrons. Maybe that’s the 2-3 age on this tubo. As the cigar progresses I am blown away by this aroma, maybe the best I have ever experienced out of the couple hundred Padrons I have smoked lifetime. The cigar helps bring out the vanilla in the Malbec. The Malbec in turn accentuates the dried fruit notes from the cigar. The pairing works well. Sweetness is really coming through with cedar and a sort of honey graham crackers. The aroma turns to much sweeter tone like baked honey pastries. Reminiscent of an aged Cohiba Siglo. Coming to the end of the first third, the honey graham cracker takes over. The Draw has loosened slightly which is perfection to me.
Tasting Notes – Second Third: As the cigar progresses into the second third, the complexity deepens. The perfect looking ash fell off at the beginning of the second half. The flavor retains its sweet honey graham cracker note with some cedar and chocolate undertones. The smoke remains smooth and velvety, showcasing the well-aged tobacco leaves that Padron is renowned for. Quickly transitioning back to a spicy dried fruit note. The retrohale has a decent amount of spice and white pepper that burns the nostrils. Aroma changes again to cinnamon, nutmeg and a herbal spice. Quite unique. The undertones of the honey graham cracker an sweetness now liger on the palate. The cigar transitions into a spicy version of a honey graham cracker with cinnamon and nutmeg being the two forefront flavor notes. Smoke is turning into a meaty and thick mouth feel and the spiciness is back half way through the second third. This cigar is starting to feel medium strength but is still very smooth. As the second third comes to a close, I get a spicy dried fruit medley with a heavy dose of sweet cream that lingers. The balance between sweetness and spice in this phase is truly captivating.
Tasting Notes – Final Third: In the final third, the cigar reaches its crescendo of flavors. The flavor transitions into a spicy vanilla cream with dried fruit and a touch of honey. The draw remains consistent, providing a satisfying, cool smoke throughout. The intricate blend of flavors reaches its peak, leaving a memorable impression on the palate. Phenomenal strong baked honey goods and herbal undertones on the aroma. The flavor remains the honey cream baked goods that has a little spice on the retrohale. At the end of the final third it burns a little hot but its hard to put this sucker down. The flavor ends in baking spices and dried fruit that leaves a milk chocolate and interesting herbal note at back of throat.
Food and Drink Pairings: To elevate the experience of the Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Presidente Tubo Natural Cigar, consider pairing it with a fine aged single malt Scotch whisky. The complex notes of the whisky complement the cigar’s layers of flavor, creating a harmonious pairing. Additionally, a strong espresso or a cup of dark roasted coffee can enhance the cocoa and espresso tones present in the cigar, providing a delightful synergy. I also paired mine with an 2017 Argentinean Malbec from Mendoza that accentuated the fruits and the cream coming from the cigar. Can/t really go wrong with any of the pairings to be honest as this cigar would go lovely with any of the traditional pairings.
