History of the Brand: Charter Oak Connecticut Cigars are a creation of Foundation Cigar Company, founded by Nicholas Melillo, a renowned name in the cigar industry. The name “Charter Oak” pays homage to an iconic Connecticut legend, where a massive oak tree symbolized the early American spirit of independence. This brand embraces that spirit by offering quality cigars with rich histories.

Appearance: The Charter Oak Connecticut Robusto is dressed in a silky, golden-brown Connecticut Shade wrapper. The construction is flawless, with no noticeable blemishes or soft spots. The band is elegantly simple, featuring the Charter Oak tree, a nod to its namesake.

Tasting Notes (1st Third): Upon lighting, the Charter Oak Connecticut delivers a mild, creamy smoke with notes of toasted almonds and a subtle hint of cedar. The draw is effortless, and the burn is even, showcasing the cigar’s exceptional construction. The first third is all about smoothness and a gentle introduction to the flavors to come. Chocolate cedar and oak tantalize my palate. The retro hale is smooth sweet and creamy. A savory chocolate with oak and leather appears with a honey sweetness. The mouthfeel is creamy and silky and burn is incredible. The aroma is quite muted as I am smoking outside and it is quite breezy. The flavor profile so far is incredible for the price.

Tasting Notes (2nd Third): As I progress into the second third, the cigar transitions into a medium-bodied profile. The creamy notes persist, now complemented by hints of sweet vanilla and a gentle pepper spice on the retrohale. Chocolate and BBQ flavors appear with some sweetness. More Chocolate!!! Transitions to a stronger BBQ note with touch of honey and lots of leather and chocolate undertones. Burn continues to be impeccable and the draw is perfect. Aroma is toasty and sweet with a bit of hay. At the end of the third there is a beautiful malted chocolate note that come to the forefront. The flavors are well-balanced, creating a delightful complexity that keeps me engaged.

Tasting Notes (Final Third): In the final third, the Charter Oak Connecticut Cigar maintains its medium-bodied character. The creamy texture continues, joined by an increase in cedar and a touch of leather. The sweetness lingers in the background, making for a satisfying and smooth finish. The savory BBQ flavor comes out and is a beautiful pairing with the creamy sweetness. Lots of chocolate and oak on the retrohale which is still buttery smooth. At the end it starts to get a bit spicy with an oak note that is complimented by sweet milk chocolate. The cigar ends with a milk chocolate and a leather note. Lovely cigar and definitely box worthy!

Food and Drink Pairings:

  • Food Pairing: The Charter Oak Connecticut pairs wonderfully with grilled chicken skewers and a light lemon herb sauce. The cigar’s mild profile won’t overpower the delicate flavors of the dish.
  • Drink Pairing: I recommend enjoying this cigar with a crisp, chilled glass of Chardonnay. The wine’s citrus notes and subtle oakiness complement the cigar’s creamy and woody flavors perfectly.

Overall Score: 91/100 The Charter Oak Connecticut Cigar is a testament to the quality and craftsmanship that Foundation Cigar Company is known for. From its rich history to its impeccable construction and smooth, evolving flavors, this cigar is a delightful journey through time and taste. Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned aficionado, the Charter Oak Connecticut Robusto is a must-try for those who appreciate a well-balanced, mild to medium smoke.
