Introduction: Welcome to Bangkok, the vibrant and dynamic capital city of Thailand! Known for its rich cultural heritage, stunning temples, bustling street markets, and incredible street food, Bangkok offers an unforgettable experience for every traveler. This guide will provide you with essential information about the city’s history, popular activities, must-see attractions, best places to stay and eat, and transportation options. Let’s dive into the exciting world of Bangkok!
Part 1: History and Culture Bangkok has a fascinating history that dates back to the 15th century. Originally a small trading post, it grew into the capital of the Kingdom of Siam in 1768. The city’s official name is the longest in the world, “Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit.” However, it is commonly referred to as Bangkok, which means “City of Angels.”
Part 2: Popular Activities and Attractions
- Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew: Explore the iconic Grand Palace, the official residence of the King of Thailand, and marvel at the stunning Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) within its complex.
- Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn): Witness the beauty of this riverside temple with its intricate architecture and climb to the top for panoramic views of the city.
- Floating Markets: Experience the vibrant atmosphere of floating markets like Damnoen Saduak or Amphawa, where you can shop for local goods and taste delicious street food.
- Chao Phraya River Cruise: Take a leisurely boat cruise along the Chao Phraya River, admiring the cityscape and passing by historical landmarks.
- Chatuchak Weekend Market: Indulge in a shopping spree at one of the world’s largest outdoor markets, offering a vast array of items, from clothing to antiques.
- Muay Thai Boxing: Witness the thrilling national sport of Thailand by watching a live Muay Thai boxing match at one of the city’s stadiums.
- Bangkok Chinatown: Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Chinatown, exploring narrow streets filled with shops, markets, and mouthwatering street food.
- Y Spa: The best spa I found in Bangkok. It cost $10 a day for the spa and only $20 for one of the best oil massages I have gotten in Thailand.
- Cowboy Soi Street: If you want to experience the ladyboy bars and the red light district, this is the better of the two streets in my opinion.
- Cigar lounges: For my Cigar Aficionados, I recommend either the Cohiba Atmosphere, Whisgars, or CigarOne. There are cutting fees at alot of these lounges. Unfortunately, cigars and alcohol are heavily taxed in Thailand. So the cuban cigar inventory and prices are very expensive compared to other places in the world. Still worth going especially if you bring your own cigars!
Part 3: Accommodation and Dining
- Best Areas to Stay: Sukhumvit, Silom, and Siam are popular areas for tourists with a wide range of hotels, from budget to luxury. Khao San Road is ideal for backpackers.
- Luxury Hotels: The Mandarin Oriental, The Peninsula, and The Siam offer world-class hospitality and luxurious amenities.
- Mid-Range Hotels: Novotel Bangkok Sukhumvit, Centre Point Silom, and Pathumwan Princess Hotel provide comfortable accommodations at a reasonable price.
- Budget Accommodations: For budget-friendly options, consider hostels like Lub d Bangkok, Nappark Hostel, and The Yard Hostel.
- Thai Cuisine: Bangkok is a food lover’s paradise. Don’t miss trying local specialties like Pad Thai, Tom Yum Goong, Massaman Curry, and Mango Sticky Rice. Visit street food markets like Chinatown’s Yaowarat Road or the Sukhumvit Soi 38 food stalls for an authentic experience.
- Food Panda: The best app in English to order food for cheap from most restaurants.
- Chef’s Table: Value Fine Dining, can find a nice dinner and wine for less than $100 here. I highly recommend the Australian Round Cut and some of the limited appetizers like the foie gras or the charcuterie platter.
- Eat Me: Also very good fine dining restaurant, rotating menu and a tasting menu if you want a little of everything. Highly recommend as service is top notch. 4
- There are a plethora of restaurants from must try street food to fine dining. I recommend using trip advisor to find what suits your tastes and budget.
Part 4: Transportation
- BTS Skytrain and MRT: The BTS Skytrain and MRT (subway) are efficient and affordable modes of transportation, covering major areas of the city.
- Tuk-tuks and Taxis: Tuk-tuks are iconic three-wheeled vehicles that offer a unique and adventurous way to get around. Taxis are widely available, but ensure the meter is used or negotiate the fare beforehand.
- Chao Phraya Express Boat: Explore the city’s riverside attractions by hopping on a Chao Phraya Express Boat, which stops at various piers along the river.
- Grab: The Grab app is widely used in Bangkok and offers a convenient and safe option for ordering taxis and other transport services. This is the recommended way to get around Bangkok – especially the bike option as traffic is very bad.
- Walking and Biking: Bangkok’s city center is walkable, and you can also rent bicycles for a leisurely ride in parks or designated cycling areas.
