Appearance and Construction: The San Cristobal Fuerza boasts a visually stunning appearance, with a flawless, milk chocolate wrapper that doesn’t exhibit much oily sheen. Upon inspection, I noticed the cigar’s impeccable construction, showcasing even and tight seams, firmly packed tobacco, and a neatly applied triple cap. The cigar feels substantial in hand and the wrapper is not too veiny. Its size of 5 3/8 inches and a ring gauge of 50 offer a comfortable and balanced feel in hand.
Pre-Light Experience: Upon inspection, the Fuerza reveals a seductive aroma of cedar, dark chocolate, and a hint of earthiness. The cold draw is effortless, offering notes of dried fruit, leather, and a subtle spice that hints at the flavor profile to come.
Tasting Notes:
- First Third: Upon lighting the San Cristobal Fuerza, a burst of peppery spice immediately greets the palate. Accompanying the spice are notes of cedar and leather, providing a well-rounded and harmonious introduction. The draw is smooth and effortless, allowing for a generous release of flavorful smoke. The first 5 minutes had alot of earthiness, cedar, leather and a good helping of white pepper. After the first 5 minutes the cigar mellowed out into strong milk chocolate and coffee tones.
- Second Third: As we progress into the second third, the initial white pepper subsides, giving way to a symphony of flavors. The profile shifts to a creamier texture, with nuances of dark chocolate and roasted coffee emerging. The sweetness of dried fruit, reminiscent of raisins, dances alongside these notes, enhancing the overall complexity. Although the flavors are sweet and savory, a couple more years of age could really bring out the spicy hot chocolate undertones that are more subtle. The best description of the second third is a spicy molasses candy with a touch of espresso. Mouth feel is creamy with a good amount of spicy undertones in the back of the throat. Although amount of smoke generated from the cigar is not voluminous but rather wispy, it’s plenty to coat the mouth and to retrohale.
- Final Third: In the final third, the San Cristobal La Fuerza intensifies, displaying a robust character. The spice returns, accompanied by earthy undertones and a touch of black pepper. The milk chocolate tones are at the forefront and the last third reminds me a spicy hot chocolate. It is a phenomenal, the way the cigar evolves to the end. The cigar finishes strong, leaving a lasting impression on the palate. One of those sticks you hate putting down and smoke to the nub!
Food and Drink Pairings: To elevate your experience with the San Cristobal Fuerza, consider these delectable food and drink pairings:
- Espresso: I have smoked half a box or so and most of the time I pair with a double espresso and a sparkling water. These are my go to and accentuate the milk chocolate and coffee undertones already evident throughout the cigar.
- Macallan 12: I love Macallan especially with cigars that are Carmel or molasses bombs.
- Charcuterie Board: A savory charcuterie board featuring aged cheeses, cured meats, and crusty bread and a touch of honey or nuts. The salty and umami flavors of the charcuterie wonderfully contrast the San Cristobal Fuerza, accentuating its complexity.
Overall Score: 92/100 The San Cristobal Fuerza cigar delivers an exceptional smoking experience that aficionados will undoubtedly appreciate. From its flawless construction to its complex and balanced flavors, it showcases the artistry and dedication behind its creation. While it may have benefited from a slightly more age (3-5 years), the overall experience is undeniably enjoyable. For enthusiasts seeking a bold and flavorful cigar, the San Cristobal Fuerza is a must-try. The box date is Jan 22 on these and I just recently smoked 5-6 in the last month. The couple I tried before were very nice but also very young. As I let this stick age another year, the spicy hot chocolate and molasses undertones come out and the overall pepper tends to mellow out. I cannot wait for another 2 years of age when I sit down and smoke the next one!
